Born in Sallanches in 1960, Marc Desgrandchamps is a major painter of the French art scene. He plays with opacity, transparency and superimposition in his figurative works, which move away from the codes of realistic representation towards surrealism: distorted perspective, undefined space, fragmented bodies, ghostly objects, etc. Populated by enigmatic figures, these canvases draw on references from many fields – art history, photography, cinema, literature, music – which are ours to decipher.
This publication looks in detail at the development of the artist’s practice and the major themes underlying his work.
