José Parlá: Contemporary Palimpsests is an expansive monograph celebrating the remarkable four-decade career of Cuban American artist José Parlá. This first midcareer
publication coincides with major milestones, including solo exhibitions in Miami and Tokyo - "Homecoming" at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and "Home Away from Home" at the Pola Museum in Tokyo. The volume traces Parlá’s evolution from his early days of wall markings in Miami to his international acclaim, showcasing his innovative blend of gestural abstraction, calligraphy, and urban textures that have redefined contemporary painting.
Spanning from 1985 to 2025, the richly illustrated book features paintings, murals, rare sketchbooks, and archival materials. It also includes essays by curators Jonathan Rider and Iván de la Nuez, alongside an intimate interview with Rey Parlá, his brother and creative collaborator.

The colourful monumental paintings of the Cuban-American contemporary artist.
José Parlá (b. 1973) creates paintings and multidisciplinary works inspired by his interest in hybrid forms of abstraction. His works poetically challenge concepts related to language, politics, identity, and our definitions of places and spaces. Parlá’s approach to mark-making is both physical and textural, integrating bodily gestures into a painterly stream of consciousness that features areas of addition, erasure, and layering, thereby questioning the status quo of visual culture. Parlá works across mediums blending abstraction with visual references to music, calligraphy, dance, and urban architecture. His textured, gestural compositions explore language, identity, politics, and place through a physical, layered process of mark-making. Born in Miami to Cuban parents, José Parlá studied at SCAD, the New World School of the Arts, and Miami Dade College. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
