André Marfaing (1925–1987) was a French painter and printmaker associated with abstraction and informal art. This catalogue raisonné is a complete repertory of his painted work, from his early paintings (1948–1952) to his last works, which he finished in 1986.
His first works were still lifes, landscapes and portraits. In 1952, he took the plunge into abstraction. Black, applied in thick layers, predominates in his gestural works, which play with the contrasts between light and shadow, emptiness and fullness. In 1969, he abandoned oil for acrylic, and his canvases became more refined and ascetic.
