Known and debated throughout the world for his provocative and disturbing portraits of Japanese women, often bound according to the technique of kinbaku, Japanese bondage, Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is a unique figure in contemporary photography, capable of having made his existence, his entire life that does not distinguish between private and public and professional spheres, the reservoir from which he draws daily for artistic creation. Effetto Araki presents a broad synthesis of her creative journey: From the first series of 1963-1965 Satchin and His Brother Mabo, to Subway Love, a wide-ranging collection of images stolen in the Tokyo underground between 1963 and 1972, the year in which he also produced Autumn in Tokyo, the story of an autumn spent wandering in the twilight of the Japanese capital; Sentimental Night in Kyoto, much less well-known than the famous Sentimental Journey despite having the same protagonist, his wife Yoko, and then Balcony of Love, Death Reality, Tokyo Diary of 2017, up to the very recent Araki's Paradise of 2019. The power of Araki's photographs is perceived in the strength that his images emanate, a condensation of the suffering and joyfulness that the Japanese artist embodies every time he works, transforming the set into a stage where only he and the subject portrayed exist.
