Immersed in the magnificent Renaissance tradition, crushed by a devotion to the past that is distrustful of all contemporaneity, Florence has little known and recognised the - often brilliant - artists who have passed through its territory in the 20th century. On the occasion of the ordering of the 20th century collections belonging to the Municipality of Florence, in view of the foundation of the Museo Novecento, Valentina Gensini set up a large group of experts to reconstruct the events of Florentine artistic history through unpublished studies of public and private funds and archives. The attention this volume pays to the individual disciplines weaves together many stories capable of restoring the complexity of 20th-century cultural life in Florence, recalling episodes little known even to insiders. What emerges is an impassioned portrait of those experiences that in a multidisciplinary approach, from the visual arts to dance, from architecture to theatre to photography, cinema and the music scene, were able to renew the artistic language of the city, contributing to the birth of a lively climate of artistic experimentation with international implications.
